Ten Reasons Libraries Are Still Better Than the Internet
Stephen King home to become archive and retreat |
![]() Authors Stephen and Tabitha King have long resided in a Victorian mansion in Bangor, Maine, but that iconic house will soon have a new purpose—as an archive and writers’ retreat. The Kings announced in September their intention to turn the home into an archive for Stephen King’s writing, and on October 16, Bangor City Council approved the Kings’ rezoning request, paving the way to turning the building into a nonprofit. Until recently, King’s archives were housed at the University of Maine’s Raymond H. Fogler Library. Those archives will move to the Bangor mansion, where they’ll be available by appointment to scholars.... Tor.com, Oct. 17; Bangor (Maine) Daily News, Sept. 23; Rolling Stone, Oct. 17 |
Little Free Library at Smithsonian honors Native Americans

The Smithsonian has installed a birchbark book-sharing box at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., donated by the Little Free Library nonprofit organization. The “take a book, share a book” library seeks to honor Native American culture and increase access to culturally relevant books. The miniature library was provided by LFL’s Native Library Initiative, which places them in tribal communities across the nation to meaningfully improve book access. To date, LFL has gifted more than 60 libraries to tribal communities. The NMAI box was created by Pat Kruse, an Ojibwe birchbark and quillwork artist....

Garth Brooks to receive Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced that country
musician Garth Brooks is the next recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Brooks is the youngest recipient of the prestigious prize. Brooks is one of the major changemakers in the history of country music. His music weaves together the beauty of poetry, the universality of the human experience, and the inclusiveness of other musical genres, making him one of the most influential performers in country music today. He will receive the prize at an all-star tribute concert in Washington, D.C., in March 2020, and the concert will air on PBS stations nationwide in the spring....

Remembering Andrew Carnegie’s legacy

Vartan Gregorian writes: “The rise and resilience of our nation’s libraries is a unique phenomenon. Today, we so often take for granted the existence of free public libraries that their extraordinary history and significance is almost lost to us. Yet libraries, as we understand them, would not exist without Andrew Carnegie, the ‘Patron Saint of Libraries.’ As this year marks the centennial of Carnegie’s death, I would like to reflect on the significance of his role in the development of the American public library system.”...

20% of Americans listen to audiobooks

Americans are spreading their book consumption across several formats, and the use of audiobooks is on the rise. 72% of US adults say they have read a book in the past 12 months in any format, a figure that has remained largely unchanged since 2012, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted January 8–February 7. Print books remain the most popular format for reading, with 65% of adults saying they had read a print book in the year before the survey. And since 2016, there has been an uptick in the share of Americans who report listening to audiobooks, from 14% to 20%....

Two winners of the 2019 Booker Prize |
![]() The judges for the 2019 Booker Prize for Fiction on October 14 awarded the prize to Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood for The Testaments and British author Bernardine Evaristo for Girl, Woman, Other. The Booker Prize has been jointly awarded twice before, to Nadine Gordimer and Stanley Middleton in 1974, and to Michael Ondaatje and Barry Unsworth in 1992. In 1993, the rules were changed so that only one author could win the prize. This is the first time since then that two authors have won, and it was because the judges were deadlocked. Atwood won the prize once before, in 2000 with The Blind Assassin. Evaristo is the first black woman to be awarded the Booker Prize.... The Booker Prizes, Oct. 14; New York Times, Oct. 14 |
Literary Hub's choice of the 10 best poetry collections of the decade |
![]() Emily Temple writes: “In the coming weeks, we’ll be taking a look at the best and most important books of the past decade by means of a variety of lists. We have now reached the third list in our series: the 10 best poetry collections published in English between 2010 and 2019. The following books were chosen after much debate (and several rounds of voting) by the Literary Hub staff. Tears were spilled, feelings were hurt, books were reread. And as you’ll shortly see, we had a hard time choosing just 10—so we’ve also included a list of dissenting opinions, and an even longer list of also-rans.”... Literary Hub, Oct. 15 |

Fill the Balloon
Fill the Balloon Science Experiment ages 3+. This simple experiment demonstrates the space air molecules take up as they are heated and cooled. Start with a pan of hot water and a pan of ice cold water. Then take an empty two liter bottle and put a balloon over the top. Place the bottle in the hot water and watch the balloon inflate. Then move the bottle to the cold water and watch it deflate. The science behind this experiment is that as air molecules get hot , they move around more and occupy more space, thus inflating the balloon. When the ballon was moved to the ice water, the molecules cooled off, moved closer together and occupied less space.

Scents and sensibility

Erica Bauermeister writes: “Scents are the stealth weapons in the arsenal of the senses. They head directly to the emotional parts of the brain, bypassing rationality. The memories they evoke are rich, immersive things, three-dimensional, and intimate. Novels about scents tend to affect us in a similar way. We read their sentences and dive into a sense we rarely pay attention to in our normal lives. Perfumers divide fragrances into families, much as we categorize books by genres. For these five evocative books, perfume categories seem a perfect way to characterize them.”...

The million word gap

Young children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to, a new study found. This “million word gap” could be one key in explaining differences in vocabulary and reading development, said Jessica Logan, lead author of the study and assistant professor of educational studies at the Ohio State University. Even kids who are read only one book a day will hear about 290,000 more words by age 5 than those who don’t regularly read books with a parent or caregiver....

The packhorse librarians of eastern Kentucky |
![]() During the Great Depression, the Appalachians were hit hard. Coal mines were being shut down. Many people were living in dire poverty. In 1936, as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Kentucky WPA began to hire packhorse librarians, mostly women, to carry books to isolated cabins, rural school houses, and home-bound coal miners. The bookwomen followed creek beds and fence routes, their saddlebags and pillowcases stuffed with Robinson Crusoe, Women’s Home Companion, and Popular Mechanics.... NPR: Morning Edition, Sept. 13 |
